Route guide
From Muscat, Jeddah is a journey across three countries and almost the full width of Arabia. It suits people relocating to western Saudi Arabia, families travelling with months' worth of luggage, and travellers who simply prefer the road. An Omani driver starts you off in Muscat, a UAE car takes over after the first border, and a Saudi driver meets you at Al Batha for the long leg west to Jeddah.
Travel time & distance
Duration
~2 days recommended
Distance
~2,300 km
The total is roughly 29 hours of driving and border time. The first day carries both borders: Oman into the UAE, then the UAE into Saudi Arabia at Al Ghuwaifat. That makes a night in Riyadh the natural pause, leaving day two for the desert highway west to Jeddah.
For journeys of this length, we generally recommend splitting the trip into two days with an overnight stop, typically in Riyadh. This allows for a more comfortable and well-paced journey. However, it is also possible to complete the transfer in one continuous trip if preferred.
What to keep with you
- Passports and visas for the UAE and Saudi Arabia, kept together
- A small day bag, so you are not opening suitcases at each border
- Some local cash in rials and dirhams for snacks at rest stops
- Phone chargers and a power bank for a long day in the car
- Any medication you need during the trip, in your hand luggage
Border crossing process
Oman → UAE → Saudi Arabia
This route crosses 2 borders, each with its own arrangement. At Al Wajajah / Hatta: After exit control, a shuttle bus takes you between the two posts (a small fee may apply for the last leg, paid locally). Your next driver is waiting just past the border. At Al Ghuwaifat / Al Batha: Your first driver takes you to the exit post. After passport control, you cross to the other post by free shuttle bus or by taxi (about AED 300-400, paid locally). Your second driver is waiting on the other side.
- 1Your Omani driver drops you at the Al Wajajah exit post

- 3A shuttle bus takes you between the two posts (a small fee may apply for the last leg, paid locally)
- 4UAE entry at Hatta: passport, visa and customs checks

- 8Cross to the Saudi post at Al Batha by free shuttle bus or taxi (about AED 300-400, paid locally)

A second vehicle with a fresh driver will be waiting after the border to continue your journey. The entire process is coordinated in advance to minimise waiting times and ensure a seamless experience.
How the handovers run
There are two. At the Oman-UAE border your Omani driver stops at the exit post; you clear passport and customs control, and the UAE car meets you at the agreed handover point. Your Saudi driver then takes you on to Jeddah.
