Route guide
Leaving Doha for Jeddah means driving west across the Arabian Peninsula, around 1,550 km, in a single car. Travellers book it for a move to Jeddah, a long family trip, or simply because they would rather not fly. You stay with one driver from your door in Doha through the Abu Samra and Salwa posts to your address on the Red Sea. A night in Riyadh splits it into two easier days.
Travel time & distance
Duration
~2 days recommended
Distance
~1,550 km
Plan for roughly 20 hours of driving and border time, best split with an overnight stop. The Abu Samra border comes early, roughly an hour out of Doha, so a morning start clears it before queues grow. From Riyadh it is a long desert highway west to Jeddah, with rest stops along the way.
For journeys of this length, we generally recommend splitting the trip into two days with an overnight stop, typically in Riyadh. This allows for a more comfortable and well-paced journey. However, it is also possible to complete the transfer in one continuous trip if preferred.
Two days or one?
- Two days: Doha to Riyadh first, then the longer leg west to Jeddah the next morning
- One day: around 20 hours with rest stops, best with a very early start from Doha
- Same car and driver whichever you choose, so the bags never leave the boot
- Two days suits children and older travellers; one day suits tight schedules and solo travellers
Border crossing process
Abu Samra / Salwa
This route involves a direct land crossing between Qatar and Saudi Arabia via the Abu Samra border. The journey is completed in the same vehicle, with no vehicle change required.
- 1Complete Qatar exit procedures at Abu Samra
- 2Complete Saudi entry procedures at Salwa
- 3Same vehicle continues onward to Jeddah
At the Abu Samra and Salwa posts
Qatar exit comes first at Abu Samra, then Saudi entry at Salwa a short drive on. You stay with the same car, so there is no unloading. Have every passport and any Saudi e-visa ready before you reach the post. Your driver deals with the vehicle documents and knows how the lanes work, which keeps the stop as short as the queue allows.
Doha door to Jeddah door
