    Route guide

Leaving Abu Dhabi for Jeddah, you head west along the coast to the Saudi border at Al Ghuwaifat, then right across the kingdom to the Red Sea. It's one of the longest routes we run. Residents book it for family visits, business in Jeddah or onward travel to Makkah, and anyone carrying more than an airline allows finds it easier. A UAE driver takes you to the border, you cross between the posts by free shuttle bus or taxi, and a Saudi-side driver continues to Jeddah.

    Travel time & distance

    Duration

    ~2 days recommended

    Distance

    ~1,900 km

Expect roughly 23 to 24 hours of driving and border time if you go straight through, so we recommend an overnight stop. Queues on UAE exit at Al Ghuwaifat, or at Saudi entry at Al Batha, are the main variable. Leaving Abu Dhabi early usually means a quieter border and less night driving on the Saudi side.

For journeys of this length, we generally recommend splitting the trip into two days with an overnight stop, typically in Riyadh. This allows for a more comfortable and well-paced journey. However, it is also possible to complete the transfer in one continuous trip if preferred.

    Breaking the trip in Riyadh

Twenty-plus hours in a car is a lot in one go. That's why we normally recommend a night in Riyadh, which divides the route into two days of similar length: the UAE and the border on day one, then the drive west to the Red Sea on day two. You arrive in Jeddah fresh, with time to settle in.

When the drive beats the flight

Flying is faster, and for a solo traveller with a carry-on it usually makes sense. The drive suits a different kind of trip: a family with a car full of luggage, someone moving house, or a group who would otherwise pay for several tickets and excess baggage. Because the price is per vehicle, the more of you there are, the better the numbers look.
