    Route guide

Abu Dhabi to Al Khobar is a practical one-day drive of about 700 km, popular with engineers and consultants working in the Eastern Province and with families heading back after a stay in the capital. Your UAE driver takes you west to Al Ghuwaifat. You clear both posts, crossing between them by free shuttle bus or taxi, then a Saudi driver brings you the rest of the way to Khobar or Dhahran.

    Travel time & distance

    Duration

    ~8–9 hours

    Distance

    ~700 km

Door to door, count on about 8 to 9 hours. Leaving from the city centre or the islands adds a little at the start, and the Saudi entry checks are where most of the variation sits. Midweek mornings tend to be calmer than the days around a public holiday.

    Leg by leg

    • Abu Dhabi to Al Ghuwaifat with your UAE driver, heading west along the coast of Abu Dhabi emirate
    • Exit and entry formalities, with a free shuttle bus or taxi between the posts, usually 30 to 60 minutes in total
    • Al Batha to Al Khobar with your Saudi driver, including a rest stop on the Saudi highway
    • About 8 to 9 hours in total on a normal day

    Border crossing process

    Al Ghuwaifat → Al Batha

This route involves a coordinated border crossing between the UAE and Saudi Arabia. Passengers are required to exit the vehicle and complete immigration and customs procedures in person. We arrange vehicles on both sides of the border to ensure a smooth and efficient transfer.

    1. 1Arrive at the UAE exit checkpoint at Al Ghuwaifat - passports stamped out
    2. 2Cross the border zone to the Saudi entry checkpoint at Al Batha
    3. 3Saudi visa and vehicle documentation processed
    4. 4Customs inspection and clearance
    5. 5Continue on Saudi highways to Al Khobar

A second vehicle with a fresh driver will be waiting after the border to continue your journey. The entire process is coordinated in advance to minimise waiting times and ensure a seamless experience.

Changing cars at the Saudi border

Your UAE car stops at the Al Ghuwaifat exit post. Saudi immigration checks your visa, customs checks your bags, and your Saudi driver meets you after that. Small wheeled cases make this part far easier than large loose bags.
